Meet the Maker behind SIN Ceramics

MEET VIRGINIA SIN
SIN is a Brooklyn based ceramics homegoods company with a mission is to spread warmth and happiness to every home by infusing delight and function into everything they create.
Virginia Sin, CEO of SIN, took her first ceramics class in high school. After working in advertising for over a decade, she rediscovered ceramics as a creative outlet from her office job, working on SIN in the evenings and on weekends.
SIN started with Virginia’s porcelain paper plate, made from a sustainable paper clay: a paper and porcelain clay concoction Virginia mixed herself and pressed using actual paper plates. Today SIN is known for their use of coils and slabs redefining the way they are used in manufacturing and highlighting the beauty of their curves and shapes.
“Clay is an art form that encourages risk taking, and it became the perfect medium to start forming and shaping my own brand.”
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS METHODOLOGY?
“Coils and slabs have historically been used in ceramics for support or structure, when a piece is finished and fired, the viewer would not know a coil or slab was used in its production. SIN turns that idea on its head making these components the foundation of the products we design and make.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?
“SIN is making ceramics thoughtfully and intentionally designing products meant to be loved for a long time by a lot of people. As a Brooklyn based ceramics company, we provide full time jobs with benefits in a field that rarely does in the city, and we pride ourselves on leading with kindness and empathy as a business.”
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR YOUR BUSINESS
“To bring delight and function into the homes of every person in the world, that the pieces of SIN someone owns would create a warm and happy home for their owner.”
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW OR UNDERSTAND MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU DO IT?
“How much love and care goes into every product we make. From thoughtful design to the many hands that handle each piece with love, SIN is a company of passionate women who love what they do and show that in the things they make.”

WE ARE A HUGE BELIEVER IN CELEBRATING THE IMPERFECTIONS – SOME PEOPLE VIEW THIS IS AS A FLAW FROM THE MAKER, WE WANT TO EDUCATE THEM MORE AND HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS PART OF THE NATURAL BEAUTY – HOW DO YOU HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME THIS THINKING?
“We celebrate subtle differences in form and glaze application here at SIN. We see them as signs that the things you are purchasing are made by human hands and each handled with love.”
CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A STORY OR USAGE OF YOUR PRODUCTS THAT IS A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY?
“We love seeing our Uni wall hooks used as tiebacks for curtains, or our Urch salt cellar is used by many of us here at SIN as a catchall. Our Wyat and Weylyn candelabras make beautiful vessels for ikebana style flower arranging as well.
WHO WOULD YOUR DREAM JOB BE FOR (DEAD OR ALIVE) AND HOW WOULD YOU MAKE YOUR MARK?
“My dream job is for myself, so I’m already living my dream!”
