Meet the Maker behind Tie-Up Textiles
MEET KATHLEEN, THE MAKER BEHIND TIE-UP TEXTILES
Tie-up Textiles is a collection of high-end fabrics that steps away from trends, and rather focuses on nonconformist texture, organic shape, and a timeless colour palette. This unique approach seamlessly fits into a vast array of interior design aesthetics. Highly influenced by a curiosity for early 20th century manufacturing and a deep romance toward the desolate landscapes of Southwest America, Kathleen’s inspiration brings to life a unique approach for the fundamentals of design. This transitional approach proves essential to nearly any room or lifestyle. Paired rustically, industrially, even urban to farmhouse, Tie-up Textiles delivers an out of the box, visual and tactile experience.
“Tie-Up Textiles was established through two core values; to offer a bold alternative to the mainstream motifs so long associated with interior fabrics, and to pay homage to the dying era of artisanal hand work.”
When it comes to Kathleen’s process, everything is developed by hand. Her patterns originate from processes of rust-dyeing, shibori, hand-loomed wovens and digital prints.
The woven work is drafted start to finish on floor looms within Kathleen’s small Pennsylvania studio. The dyed fabrics are organized and processed in small batches, making each piece entirely unique.
“This is a process that takes hours of work but is always well worth it. In an age of mass production, we are shedding light on the age of handwork and attention to detail.”
Little to no outsourcing is used throughout Tie-Up’s production practices. Kathleen keep’s a low overhead to provide the highest quality, yet cost-considerate goods for clients. Her yardage collection is printed on natural fibers using water-based pigment inks, and whenever possible Kathleen partners with local mills and encourages environmentally friendly practices to help significantly reduce her carbon footprint.
“At Tie-Up Textiles, home is our passion, and sustainability is our commitment.”
WHO WOULD YOUR DREAM JOB BE FOR (DEAD OR ALIVE) AND HOW WOULD YOU MAKE YOUR MARK?
“Every job past and present is a dream job for Tie-Up. For me, seeing someone else appreciate a piece of my work is such an amazing feeling, one that never gets old. In a world where people have access to almost anything, it is always an honour when they choose one of my pieces to live with.”
